About This Call

The Rubys were established in 2013 by the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance with lead funding from the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation to provide project-based funding for individual artists. The program aims to provide meaningful support to individual artists for the creation of innovative and bold projects that will have a significant impact for the artist and on the artistic community. The program is open to both emerging and established artists who are committed to their art forms.

The Rubys will have two funding rounds per year, with each round awarding grants in two of the four discipline areas. The 2014 current round focuses on Visual Arts and Literary Arts. Applicants may request up to a maximum of $10,000. Artists may submit only one application during each funding round. Visual Arts includes but is not limited to: painting, photography, sculpture, works on paper, craft, installation, traditional/folk art, cross-disciplinary, and experimental/emerging fields. Literary Arts includes but is not limited to: creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, graphic novels, cross-disciplinary, and experimental/emerging fields.

To be eligible, an artist must be a resident of Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County, Carroll County, Harford County, or Howard County at the time of application and when the grant is awarded; a U.S. Citizen or permanent legal resident; at least 21 years old; and a practicing artist who has actively and continually pursued their profession in their discipline for more than three years. Organizations, full-time students, and current board members, committee members, staff, or consultants for the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance, the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, or their immediate family members are not eligible. Selection criteria include artistic merit of the work sample, feasibility of the project, and artistic vision and potential impact for the artist and artistic community. A grant review panel of field experts will make recommendations for final approval by GBCA. Required application materials include a project description (maximum 400 words, one page), project budget (one page maximum), project timeline (one page maximum), work sample inventory (one page maximum), resume/CV (three pages maximum), and up to 10 work samples. Entry fee is $25.00.
