About This Call
The Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver, Colorado is seeking commissioned artwork for four stations on the FasTracks West Rail Line, a 12.1-mile light rail line located between the Auraria Campus in downtown Denver and the Jefferson County Government Center in Golden. This is an open competition for professional artists residing in the United States. Teams of artists are welcome to apply. Artists may apply for as many stations as desired.
Budgets for commissions are: Sheridan Station $75,000 USD, Lamar Station $75,000 USD, Red Rocks College Station $45,000 USD, and Kipling Bridge $12,500 USD. Commission amounts are inclusive of all costs including design fees, consultation fees, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and contingency. Sheridan Station features an open plaza area (77 ft. long by 31 ft. wide) suitable for sculptural elements and serves approximately 3,765 passengers per weekday. Lamar Station offers three location options including fencing along a bike path (5 ft. high, 400 feet long), an open space area west of the station, or a greenspace area north of the station, serving approximately 760 passengers per day. Red Rocks College Station includes a chain link fence location (6 feet tall) east of the station, serving approximately 1,030 passengers per weekday. Kipling Bridge features eight cutout panels (four on north and four on south sides) with upper panels measuring 49 inches wide by 40 inches tall and lower panels 49 inches wide by 96 inches tall.
Artwork must be structurally sound, cannot interfere with pedestrian movement or safety, and must withstand Colorado's weather conditions. Materials must be durable and require minimal maintenance. Electricity or water use requires prior approval. The selection process includes two phases: finalists will be selected by the West Rail Art Committee based on application materials, then finalists will prepare proposals and be interviewed. Submit eight digital images of previously completed artworks and a statement of interest through the CaFÉ online system. Artists submitting kinetic, sound, or media works must also submit a DVD of no more than five minutes to Brenda Tierney, RTD, 1600 Blake Street FAS-WC, Denver, CO 80202.
