RTD Northwest Rail Line Westminster Station Public Art Commission

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver, Colorado is seeking commissioned artwork for the Westminster commuter rail station on the Northwest Rail Line, located at West 71st Avenue and Lowell Boulevard in Westminster, CO. The station is 11 minutes from Denver Union Station. This is part of the FasTracks Eagle Project, which includes the East Rail, Gold Line, and Northwest Rail Line, all opening in 2016.

The artwork is strongly preferred in the underpass connecting the parking garage and future Westminster development to the station access, park and neighborhoods. The theme identified by the City of Westminster is "Water," though use of actual water is not encouraged. Electricity is a viable and encouraged option, with junction boxes available at four locations in the tunnel. The artwork must withstand Colorado's constantly changing weather conditions, including wide temperature fluctuations and intense sunlight. Materials must be durable and require little or no maintenance. Artwork proposed near the tracks must not violate clearance and safety regulations concerning overhead electrical wires or impede train operations. Pedestrian movement, safety, and security are priorities.

The selection process has two phases. All artists may apply by the November 7, 2014 deadline. Finalists will be selected by the Eagle Project Art Committee based on application materials, will make a site visit and prepare a proposal, and will be interviewed by the committee. Finalists will be notified November 24, 2014, with final selection announced January 26, 2015. Installation is planned for Spring 2016. Applications must include eight digital images of relevant work with media, size, title, date and brief description; current resume; two professional references; and optional description of initial ideas for the artwork. There is no charge to register and submit entries.
