About This Call

Rowan University is seeking to commission public artwork(s) integrated into the design for a new addition to the Chamberlain Student Center, referred to as the "Agora." The Agora is conceived as a biophilic response and metaphoric extension of the campus greenway, influenced by the New Jersey Pine Barrens ecosystem. The site of art inclusion consists of six built-in landscaped planters within an interior amphitheater, ranging from approximately three feet to ten feet in length and two feet, ten inches in width. Each planter holds approximately two feet of soil with interior plantings that replicate the flora of the pine barrens. Artist finalists will be asked to propose an artwork installation that integrates into or uses these planters as their base.

Interested artists must submit a portfolio of past-completed work via CallForEntry.org (CAFE). Application materials include: a brief artist's bio, a letter of interest that includes references with phone numbers and email contact for previous public arts commissions, four to eight digital images of existing completed artwork, and confirmation of age and residency within 150 miles of the New Jersey border. The proposed budget for this project is approximately $120,000, covering all costs incurred by the artist relating to design, fabrication, and installation. A stipend of $1,000 will be provided to shortlisted artists to offset costs related to proposal preparation.

Eligibility: Priority applicants are individuals who self-identify as women and BIPOC artists. All applicants must be regionally based, residing no more than 150 miles from Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, and must be over the age of 18. The anticipated timeline includes: EOI deadline June 30, 2022; shortlist artist invitation for RFP by August 31; shortlist artist virtual project orientation on September 6; proposal deadline October 14; artist notification by end of October 2022; and anticipated installation Winter-Spring 2023.
