About This Call
The City of Overland Park is seeking an artist or artists to install two sculptures on roundabouts within the CityPlace mixed-use development. Roundabout #1 is 100' in diameter; Roundabout #2 is 76' in diameter. Both sites are traffic island roundabouts requiring proposals that can be appreciated in 360 degrees and in all light conditions and seasons. When possible, the City prefers installations that reflect the culture, history, people and values of the community. The two sculpture sites should ideally be compatible with each other and the surrounding development. Artists may apply for both locations, in which case the sites must be compatible. If two separate proposals are selected, the selection committee will demonstrate compatibility between them.
Proposals will be reviewed by the Public Art Master Plan Committee, comprised of artist experts, residents and stakeholders. The City of Overland Park Governing Body has final authority on all art acquisition decisions. Both existing works and proposals for future works will be considered equally. Proposals must demonstrate ability to withstand normal Kansas weather conditions including temperature fluctuations and average wind load. While annual maintenance is expected, preference will be given to proposals with low maintenance requirements and costs. The selection committee prefers contemporary art that incorporates light (LED not Neon) and/or color. Water features will not be considered. Bronze is not preferred but will be considered. Whimsy is welcome.
Both roundabouts are elevated above the road with curbing and stamped concrete skirting. Each has a three-point entrance with traffic limited to 20 mph in the roundabouts and 35 mph on approaching streets. The sites have high visibility on the heavily traveled College Boulevard. The total budget is $200,000. Work sample requirements: 4-10 images (minimum 4), 0-3 audio files, and 0-1 video file. Proposals deadline: April 15, 2015. Review of proposals will be completed by April 30, 2015. Detailed site schematics, development plans and elevation images are available at http://www.opkansas.org/wp-content/uploads/CallforEntry-CityPlace.pdf
