About This Call
The City of Sisters is conducting a search for an original, large-scale, permanent public artwork for the roundabout at the intersection of US20 and Locust Street at the East entrance of Sisters. The artwork should express the theme of Western Heritage and Culture, encompassing the historical, social, and artistic traditions of the region. The installation will serve as a visual gateway and focal point for residents and tourists, celebrating the rich history and vibrant culture of the community.
Key elements to consider include Sisters as a gateway for adventure and exploration, the strength and individuality of the western community, community traditions of storytelling and visual arts, the influence of logging, ranching and agriculture, Indigenous peoples' traditions in the region, emphasis on family and community bonds, and the role of geography. The design must be exceptionally durable, require minimal maintenance, be resistant to theft and vandalism, and comply with Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) public safety and highway operations requirements. The artwork will be viewed from vehicles, buses, bicycles, and by pedestrians and should not invite climbing.
The total project budget is $175,000 to include permit fees, engineering drawings, subcontractors, footings/excavation, delivery, insurance, travel, landscaping, installation, and traffic mitigation. The selection process includes two phases: Phase 1 selects up to four finalists based on artist statement, comparable project experience, artistic excellence, and site-specific concept. Phase 2 requires finalists to create a physical 3D model and present it to the committee. Finalists will receive a $1,750 stipend. The Sisters City Council will make the final decision. Installation is scheduled for Fall 2025. Submissions must include an artist statement (not exceeding 5000 characters), a site-specific concept proposal with drawings and draft budget, and 1-6 images of original representative work from the last 12 years showcasing outdoor sculptures or installations.
