About This Call
The City of Pasadena is seeking eight sculptural/three-dimensional public artworks for the fourth iteration of the Rotating Public Art Program. The program will include phased installation of artworks at existing exterior locations throughout Pasadena. This opportunity seeks both existing, loaned artworks and proposals for new commissioned, site-responsive artworks from professional artists and artist teams based in California. All artworks will be exhibited for a 36-month period.
The program will select six (6) existing loaned artworks and commission two (2) original site-responsive artworks. Loaned artworks should be sculptural, already completed, sufficiently durable for outdoor placement, and must allow for attachment to a structural footing. Commissioned artwork proposals should consider the context of the site and its relation to the community, environment, and audience. Applicants proposing commissioned works must submit a Preliminary Artwork Concept including a written narrative and visual representations such as digital renderings, photographs, sketches, or maquettes. Artists should consider scale, material, durability, safety, traffic concerns, and construction methods.
Eligibility is open to artists and teams over 18 years old based in California. Loaned artwork applicants will receive an honorarium of $8,000 for the 36-month exhibition period. Commissioned artwork applicants will receive $12,000. The City will provide installation and de-installation, outreach and publicity, foundation and pads, identification signage, property and fine art insurance during the exhibition period, and promotion on the City's Cultural Affairs website. Artists are required to deliver and pick up artwork to and from the site. Eight exhibition sites are distributed throughout the City in each Council District and include traffic triangles, medians, street corners, and other neighborhood plots with varying concrete pad sizes and heights. A detailed schematic of attachment points is available for applicants to review.
