About This Call
The City of Pasadena seeks artists to participate in the fourth iteration of the Rotating Public Art Exhibition Program, which will include the phased installation of eight public art projects: two commissioned and six loaned artworks. All sites are located throughout Pasadena on City-owned property. Artists will create public artworks for predetermined sites and are expected to remain in place throughout the 36-month exhibition period. A Selection Panel comprised of Neighborhood Art Associates will review each proposal for both loaned and commissioned works. Scale and placement at each site are substantial considerations in the evaluation process. All artworks will be placed on existing concrete pads with specifically designed attachment points.
Loaned artworks: The City seeks loans of six existing sculptural works from artists, artist teams, and/or galleries. Works should be engaging, sufficiently durable for outdoor placement, and must allow for attachment to a structural footing. Works are expected to remain in place throughout the 36-month exhibition period. If works are sold during that time, a replacement work may be substituted at the artwork owner's expense upon approval by the Cultural Affairs division. Loaned artworks receive an honorarium of $8,000 for the 36-month exhibition period.
Commissioned artworks: The City seeks to commission two temporary artworks. These should consider the site and context of the artwork and its relation to the surrounding community, environment, and/or audience. Applicants interested in commissioned artwork should submit a preliminary artwork concept along with a brief description, which may include renderings, sketches, models, or other visual illustrations. If selected for commission, the artist/team will work with City staff to refine their preliminary concept to appropriately fit the site. Commissioned artworks receive an honorarium of $15,000 for the 36-month exhibition period.
Artists are required to deliver and pick up artwork to/from the site. The City will assist with installation and de-installation. The City provides installation and de-installation, outreach and publicity, foundation, pads, lights and identification signage, periodic lighting maintenance, property and fine art insurance during the exhibition loan period, 100 full-color printed brochures, and a link to the artist's professional website on the City Cultural Affairs project website.
Eligibility: Open to all professional artists and teams, both emerging and established, who live or work in California. Artists must be eligible to work in the United States and have a valid U.S. Social Security or Tax Identification Number by the application deadline. Artists must not have received a City of Pasadena Public Art commission and must not have a current public art contract open, exclusive of private development, within the last three years. Members of the Selection Panel, City Council persons, Arts Commissioners, members of their families, and City of Pasadena employees are excluded from consideration.
Submission requirements: Artist Statement/Letter of Interest stating the type of artwork proposed (commissioned vs. loaned/existing), why the artist is interested in participating, and why the proposed artwork(s) are appropriate for the Program; Resume/CV no longer than four pages per artist or team member; up to 8 images in JPEG format with the longest image side being at least 1920 pixels of existing sculptural works and/or a preliminary artwork concept. Detail shots may be submitted as part of the total 8 images.
