About This Call

Denver Public Art seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create original public artwork(s) for the Ross-Broadway Branch Library, in the Speer neighborhood of Denver. The goal of the project is to commission an artwork that honors the historic architecture, while engaging with a contemporary audience, and fostering a creative environment where neighbors can be inspired to connect and learn. The commission amount is approximately $77,000.00 USD.

The Ross-Broadway Branch Library is a welcoming neighborhood hub opened in 1951 as the first of Denver's "Ross" libraries funded by the Frederick R. Ross Trust. Designed by noted architect Victor Hornbein, the building's mid-century modern style is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located at 33 E. Bayaud Avenue in a neighborhood described by community members as "resilient, diverse and artsy," the library serves as a vital community space providing books, technology, and programs for learners of all ages.

The selection panel hopes to see artwork(s) that embody a sense of joy, safety and creativity, inspiring people of all ages, abilities, and life experiences. The artwork should exist harmoniously with the historic architecture while speaking to a contemporary audience. The panel has identified an exterior location as part of a newly constructed courtyard area in what is currently the parking lot. Artists working in mediums suitable for outdoor display are sought, with particular interest in mobiles and sculpture. Digital or light-based mediums are also welcome if the historic location can support the technology. Three to five finalists will be selected to receive an honorarium and present proposals. The artwork must be installed and finalized by December 31, 2027.
