Roots

Roots is an open exhibition of works created by members of the Textile Study Group of New York (TSGNY), held at El Barrio's Artspace PS109, located at 215 E. 99th Street on the upper east side of NYC. The exhibition will encompass two floors of this community arts facility, which was transformed from an abandoned public school and reopened in 2014. The exhibition opens Wednesday, May 10, 2023, and runs through Wednesday, May 31, 2023, with an opening reception on Thursday, May 11, 2023 from 5–8 PM.

The theme of the exhibition, Roots, offers a wide scope for artistic interpretation, both literally and figuratively. The exhibit will highlight the diversity of styles, textile materials, and techniques in the work of TSGNY artists. Both two- and three-dimensional work will be considered, including wall/floor works (quilts, tapestries, weavings, carpets, and other fiber-related media), sculptural works in fiber, vessel forms/basketry, and wearables.

Artists must be full members of TSGNY as of February 1, 2023. Current newsletter members must upgrade to full membership before March 17, 2023 to be eligible. The entry fee is $40.00. Artists should submit three works for jury selection; at least one work will be included in the exhibit. For each work, provide artist name, title, dimensions, materials, date of creation/completion, and price. Submit one full JPEG image per work (1,200 pixels or greater on the longest side, under 5 MB, sRGB color profile). A close-up/detail image may also be included. Files should be labeled with the artist's name and title of work. Jury dates are March 18–April 10, 2023. Detailed instructions for delivery of accepted work will be sent by April 7, 2023. Transportation, shipping, delivery, and insurance charges are the artist's responsibility.
