Rochester ARTWalk 2 - Suspended Light Sculpture at Village Gate

ARTWalk, in partnership with the City of Rochester, New York, seeks an experienced artist or team to develop a permanent, exterior sculpture with lighting components. The sculpture will be suspended over the sidewalks and/or roadway along North Goodman Street at Village Gate to create a landmark for the Neighborhood of the Arts. The budget is $150,000 (all-inclusive: design, materials, fabrication, support cables and rigging, hardware, lighting, engineering, documentation, permits, shipping, travel, lodging, installation, and contingency fund). Liability insurance is required but not an allowable expense.

The Work is a permanent, exterior sculpture with lighting components to be suspended between two buildings containing artist studios, galleries, residences, shops and restaurants. It should function as a sculpture by day and a light work at night, creating a sense of place and animating North Goodman Street. The work must be highly durable, safe, resistant to vandalism and tampering, and designed to sustain wind, snow and ice loading in a cold climate. The artist is responsible for supplying engineering and stamped drawings and meeting Durability Criteria posted at RochesterARTWalk.org.

Eligibility: Open to experienced (5+ years) professional artists or teams with at least three successfully completed projects of similar budget and scale. Teams may include architects, lighting consultants or other partners. Applicants must demonstrate artistic and technical excellence, significant experience in permanent exterior sculpture with light and/or suspension systems, a vision for public access and community responsiveness, ability to work with design professionals, proven fabrication experience, and excellent communication skills. Architecture/engineering backgrounds are a plus. Applications from board or staff members of Village Gate, Rochester ARTWalk, Bergmann Associates, Studio William Cochran, or the City of Rochester, or their relatives or business/personal partners will not be considered.

Project Timeline: Information session November 12, 2009. Application deadline November 23, 2009 (November 19 for mailed/hand-delivered applications). Finalist notification December 2, 2009. Technical review of concept documents December 21, 2009. Models due December 30, 2009. Finalist interviews January 13, 2010. Selected artist notification January 15, 2010. Installation summer 2011.
