About This Call
The Millennium Bridge is a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge measuring 130' long, 80' wide and 25' high, completed in 2002 and designed by Architecture Denver. It spans the railroad and light rail tracks separating Riverfront Park from the 16th St. Mall and Lower Downtown (LoDo) Denver. The bridge features a 200-foot tall white tapered steel mast and serves as a major pedestrian and bicycle thoroughfare with spectacular city views.
The Millennium Bridge Public Art Selection Panel is seeking an artist or artist team working in any medium, including earthworks and interactive sculpture. The primary artwork location is at the base of the west side of the bridge, approximately 90' x 32' tapering to 9', covered in crusher fines. The space is defined to the east by a brick wall and opens onto the plaza. A pre-submission site visit is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the Millennium Bridge Plaza at Little Raven St. and 16th St.
Up to five artists or artist teams will be short-listed as semi-finalists and asked to interview or prepare a proposal. Semi-finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium to prepare and present proposals in person, though they must cover all proposal expenses including travel and per diem from this amount. The budget for the commission is approximately $100,000, inclusive of all costs including design fees, consultation, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, per diem, and contingency. Applicants must submit eight digital images of previously completed artworks, a statement of interest (500 words/2000 characters maximum), and a one- to two-page résumé via the CaFÉ online system. Artists working in kinetic, sound, or media must also submit a DVD of no more than five minutes. The selected artist will be required to enter into a contract with the Riverfront Community Foundation and obtain required insurance. This project is open to all artists regardless of background or experience level; emerging artists are encouraged to apply.
