About This Call

Adams County Cultural Arts seeks a professional artist or artist team to create an original mural on a water tank located at the Riverdale Animal Shelter in Riverdale Regional Park at 12155 Park Blvd, Brighton, CO 80601. The mural design should reference the deep connection between humans and the environment. The water tank is 26 feet high with a circumference of 103 feet and is visible from surrounding park trails, the South Platte River Trail, major roads including East 120th Parkway, Riverdale Road, Henderson Road, and Brighton Road, and from the Adams County Historical Society and Museum. Most viewers will see the mural from 500–4,000 feet away while passing by on foot, bike, or car, though visitors to the Riverdale Animal Shelter can view it up close. The mural design should be impactful at both distances and should not repeat pet-focused themes already present at the nearby shelter.

The project budget is $55,500, inclusive of all costs associated with design and installation including artist fees, site visits, design, materials, fabrication, site access (scaffolding, lift, etc.), installation, community engagement, insurance conforming to Adams County requirements, travel, transportation, documentation, maintenance plan, and consultants' and subcontractors' fees. Primer and sealant are not part of the mural artist's scope and will be contracted separately by the County. The selected artist will be responsible for community engagement that invites the public into their art practice through forms such as community artmaking, gathering community input, social media campaigns, or workshops. The artist must also provide photo and video documentation of the design process, community engagement, fabrication, installation, and post-installation work.

Applications are due May 12, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Applicants must submit 5–10 work samples (photos or videos), a statement of interest, and a resume highlighting past projects of similar scope via the CaFÉ online application system. There is no application fee. Finalists (3–5) will be notified May 24 and will each receive a $500 honorarium to complete a project-specific proposal. Finalist interviews will be held in person in Brighton, CO on June 25 & 26. The project is open to all professional mural artists. Payment is scheduled in five installments: 15% upon generation of PO, 20% upon design approval, 20% upon completion of community engagement, 20% upon approval of site access and installation plan, and 25% upon final installation approval and receipt of all project documentation and maintenance plan approval.
