Rise: Trees; Our Botanical Giants

This juried exhibition invites artists to submit innovative artworks exploring trees from aesthetic, conceptual, environmental, scientific, philosophical, and/or poetic perspectives. Selected artwork will be featured in Vermont press and an art magazine, with accepted works eligible for the onsite exhibition at Mad River Valley Arts gallery in Waitsfield, Vermont, from March 7 to April 26, 2024.

Artists may enter 2 or 3 original artworks in either 2 or 3 dimensions. Accepted media include painting, drawing, illustration, graphic design, fashion design, mixed-media 2-D, photography, sculpture (ceramics, wood, metals, glass, recycled/readymade combinations), textiles, installation, industrial arts, interdisciplinary practice combining sciences/history with art, and mechanical technologies such as robotics and video. Artwork will be judged on strong craft, innovative design, thoughtfulness, and relevance to current dialogue about trees in the context of climate shifts, ecological, psychological, and philosophical perspectives.

Entry fee is $25 for up to two images or 2 video files; a third image costs an additional $5. Submit 2-3 work samples (images in JPEG/JPG format, 1,200 pixels or greater on longest side, under 5 MB, sRGB color profile). Artworks created within the last three years are preferred. Artists must submit an artist resume, artist statement, and artist bio. Entries close December 28, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Notifications will be emailed on or before January 15, 2024. Juried selections will include one artwork per artist. Prizes: 1st place $300, 2nd place $250, 3rd place $200. Artists must be over 18 years old.
