About This Call

The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts is commissioning artwork for the façade of the Intermodal Station Parking Garage at T. F. Green Airport, 700 Jefferson Boulevard, Warwick, RI. The project is funded through Rhode Island's Public Art Law, which mandates that 1% of all state capital construction and renovation funds be allocated to the purchase and maintenance of public art. The budget for this commission is $270,000.

The Intermodal Parking Garage is a 6-level structure with approximately 1,800 parking spaces for rental car operators and 640 spaces for rail commuters. Only the façade is under consideration for the public art commission. Along Jefferson Boulevard, the façade is 463 feet 2 inches long and 75 feet 2 inches above grade. The garage is designed as an "Open Parking Garage" per Building Code, requiring uniformly distributed openings for natural ventilation. All installations must be placed in front of existing solid surfaces only, or where installed over existing open areas, must be installed away from openings a distance equal to or greater than the maximum dimension of the obstruction. Freestanding work may be considered if it is of sufficient height.

Applications must be submitted through CaFÉ and include: a current resume for each artist, six digital images of relevant artwork (completed within the past ten years), and a written statement not exceeding 3,000 characters addressing the artist's preliminary concept for site-specific public art and the proposed project budget. Three finalists will be selected and each will receive an honorarium of $2,500 to develop detailed proposals including itemized budgets, scale models, renderings, and in-depth project descriptions. The submission deadline is December 15, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. EST. There is no charge to apply.
