About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita is seeking an artwork to be permanently located at Santa Clarita's Central Park. The City intends to select one artist or team of artists to design and fabricate an original, site-specific sculpture for a paved pedestrian circular plaza for Central Park's new buildout. The identified location is at Central Park, 27150 Bouquet Canyon Rd, Santa Clarita, CA 91350.
The all-inclusive budget for this project is $85,000. Up to five (5) semifinalists will be invited to create site-specific artwork proposals and will receive a $1,000 honorarium. Each semifinalist will participate in a 30-minute virtual interview with the Artist Selection Committee to present their final proposal, covering the concept of the site-specific artwork, maintenance and conservation, budget, and questions from the committee. Evaluation criteria include visual impact, interpretation and creativity, composition and design, craftsmanship, clarity of project-specific intent and artistic vision, and compliance with design criteria and eligibility guidelines.
Finalists are responsible for engineering, installation, and insurance. Engineering drawings and instructions must be submitted by a California licensed engineer and approved by the City. The artwork must comply with standard engineering practices, ADA standards, and not present a hazard to public safety. Installation must follow engineered plans and be performed by the artist with City supervision. The artist is responsible for delivery, installation, maintenance guide, all design and fabrication expenses, transportation, travel, and hotel accommodations. Artwork must be sufficiently anchored to prevent removal or damage from wind or earthquake. If a protective coating is deemed necessary, the artist must cover this cost. Power is not available onsite; if required, solar components are suggested. The selected artist must provide insurance coverage for the installation period only, due at contract signing.
Applicants must be 18 years or older with a US mailing address and must have completed at least one sculptural public art project with a minimum $30,000 budget. Required application materials include responses to application questions, resume or CV, up to ten (10) images of previous sculptural artwork (at least one must be existing public artwork), and an artist statement. Submissions must include 5-10 images and 0-5 videos (5-10 total samples).
