About This Call
The City of Wylie is seeking an artist to create a wall mural and water feature for Fire Station #4. The artwork should reflect the scale of the building without overpowering it, complement the natural architecture of the buildings and open spaces, and be creative but conceptually accessible to viewers. The art will serve as the focal point of the facility and must be imaginative, durable, and require very low maintenance.
The design theme is "NEVER FORGET" and must include a memorial reflecting the 343 FDNY Firefighters killed on 9/11. The design should incorporate a piece of the World Trade Center if obtained by the Fire Station, with flexibility to work without it if unavailable. Materials can include stone, concrete, metal, or other suitable materials. Water features are desired but not required. Building specifications include a canopy height of 11'9" at the gutter, storm shelter roof ridge height of 23', and tower roof ridge height of 27'.
The project budget is $81,000, including the artist's fee, travel during fabrication and installation, engineering certification, materials, fabrication, transportation, documentation, insurance, and lighting. Finalists will receive a $500 honorarium for developing a conceptual proposal (maquette) and making an in-person presentation; travel for the site visit and presentation will be arranged and paid for by the City. The selection process includes review by a panel of community members, professional artists, Fire Station #4 representatives, a Public Art Board member, and design professionals. Finalists will be invited for a site visit and community dialogue. Installation is scheduled for March/April 2022 with an unveiling in early April 2022. Submissions must include a letter of interest, resume, 6-15 images of previous work (labeled as specified, maximum 1200 pixels and 5mb each), an image list with details for each entry, and references.
