About This Call
The City of Sugar Land, Texas requests artists or artist teams to submit a statement of qualifications, letter of interest, and other materials for a sculpture to be displayed at Sugar Land Fire Station 3. The total artwork budget for this project is $23,000.
The sculpture theme should be inspired by the unofficial motto for the Sugar Land Fire Department: "We're Part of the Community, and the Community is Part of Us." The location is Sugar Land Fire Station 3 at 2255 Settlers Way Boulevard, Sugar Land, TX 77478. Artists may submit up to two separate applications, one for each of two potential artwork locations: directly on the street-facing exterior brick wall (Location A) or on the ground in front of the station (Location B). All proposed artwork must be original and site-specific. For sculptures on the exterior brick wall, materials should be durable but lightweight and must adhere to the wall's structural capacities as determined by a licensed structural engineering firm. Artists working in any medium are eligible to apply.
The selection process is two-phased. Phase 1 (RFQ) applications will be juried based on artistic excellence, professional experience, and experience working on projects of similar scale. Public art experience is required. Phase 2 (RFP) selected artists will develop detailed proposals and receive a stipend of $500 for one design or $750 for two designs. The artist's budget must include all fees and costs associated with design, fabrication, travel, transportation, site preparation, insurance, permits, installation, shipping, protective coating, equipment, taxes, progress meetings, and other project costs. Artists will be required to participate in one Meet the Artist event. Work should withstand the Houston climate and be displayed for a minimum of five years. The RFQ deadline is August 29, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Applicants must submit 6-15 images, and may submit up to 2 audio files and 2 video files. Artists 18 years of age or older are eligible; Sugar Land city staff and their families, as well as selection panel members and their families, are not eligible.
