About This Call
The City of Sugar Land, Texas requests artists or artist teams to submit qualifications for three light-based sculptures to be displayed throughout the city. The project is called Nectar Nights, with a total artwork budget of $165,000. Selected artists will be paid $55,000 per sculpture. A single artist or team could be selected to create one, two, or all three sculptures.
The three sculptures will be located at: Butterfly at Houston Museum of Natural Science (13016 University Blvd.), Hummingbird at Imperial Park (7720 Highway 90A), and Flowers at Smart Financial Centre (18111 Lexington Blvd.). Each design should reflect its specified theme and subject matter, be readily identifiable, include a light feature, and display well during both daylight and evening. Artists working in any medium are eligible. Work must withstand the Houston climate and be displayed for a minimum of five years.
The selection process is two-phased. Phase 1 (RFQ) applications will be juried based on artistic excellence, professional experience, and experience with similar-scale projects. Phase 2 (RFP) selected artists will develop detailed proposals and receive a $1,500 stipend. Applicants may submit up to 5 applications (one work per application). Submission requirements include a current CV/resume, letter of interest (limited to 2 pages), 3-5 previously completed works (2-3 views each, totaling 15 images), an image identification list, and a brief description of intended materials, maintenance, and estimated lifespan. Up to 2 video or audio files (maximum 3 minutes each) may be included. Artists must be 18 years or older and are eligible internationally. Sugar Land city staff, selection panel members, and their families are not eligible.
