About This Call

The City of Orlando is seeking a site-specific public art piece for the Florida Hospital Health Village stop on the SunRail commuter rail route. The City has secured a National Endowment for the Arts "Our Town" grant with a total art allocation budget of $50,000.00 for this project. The selected work will be located on the platform at the SunRail station at 500 East Rollins Street, Orlando, FL 32803, and could be placed near the entrance or on an adjacent six-story parking garage wall.

Desired artwork media include sculpture, mosaic, functional elements, and appropriately themed environmental artwork. The artwork should create a gateway to Loch Haven Park and its cultural amenities (Orlando Museum of Art, Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, Mennello Museum of American Art, Orlando Science Center, Orlando Fire Museum, Orlando Ballet, and Orlando Garden Club), reflect Florida Hospital's healing mission, provide an enlightening experience for commuters, and complement the area's aesthetic values. The artwork must meet State of Florida safety and ADA standards, be durable and resistant to UV, heat damage, and vandalism, and not exceed the $50,000.00 total allocation including all costs for travel, materials, fabrication, transportation, insurance, permitting, engineering, and installation. Installation must be complete by March 15, 2015.

This RFQ is open to all professional visual artists with public art experience commensurate with the project's scope and budget. Artists living in the Central Florida area are strongly encouraged to apply; a strong preference is given to local artists. Professional artists are defined as practicing fine artists generally recognized by critics and peers as professionals of serious intent and ability. Design firms are not eligible. An honorarium of $500.00 may be awarded to a limited number of artists who develop and present a site-specific proposal to the Public Art Selection Committee. Application deadline: December 12, 2014. Submit electronic submissions to [email protected] and [email protected].
