About This Call
The City of Sugar Land is seeking artists to design vinyl wraps for traffic signal control boxes located along Highway 6 between Austin Parkway and Hull Lane. Up to 13 artists or artist teams will be selected to transform these utility infrastructure pieces into colorful works of art.
Eligibility is limited to artists living or working within a 70-mile radius of Sugar Land, Texas. Artists, students, schools, and community organizations are encouraged to apply. Each selected artist or artist team will receive a $500 honorarium for their design and unlimited licensed use of that design. Fabrication and installation will be handled by the city. Wraps will remain in place for 1-3 years depending on condition.
Submissions must include a resume or artist statement (maximum 500 words), a letter of interest describing how you meet the criteria (maximum 500 words), 3-5 digital images of previously completed public art or relevant work samples, an image list with details for each work, and a design for the traffic box wrap using the provided template. Designs must conform to the template shape and follow the theme "Sugar Land Looks Ahead." Artwork may be representational or abstract but cannot contain advertising, religious content, sexual content, negative imagery, or political messaging. Dark color palettes are discouraged due to heat sensitivity of the electronics. Artists may submit up to 3 applications (one design per application). All submissions must be made electronically via www.callforentry.org by March 17, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Selected artists will be notified on April 7, 2022.
