Restore the Howl

The Rocky Mountain Wolf Project is accepting applications from visual artists for an educational public art opportunity. Gray wolves were once part of Colorado's natural landscape but were eradicated in the 1940s. There is an opportunity to reintroduce the species into Colorado, the missing link in their range which extends in the Rocky Mountains from Canada to the Colorado border, and then again with the Mexican Wolf from New Mexico into Mexico. The proposed art will help educate the community about the nature of wolves and their important role in the ecosystem. Artwork possibilities include paintings, murals, textiles, mosaics, sculptures, paper, graffiti, stencils, illustrations, and mixed media.

Artists must be residing in Colorado and have a body of work that reflects the kind of art they wish to make for the project. Artists who live in smaller towns and experience a lack of visibility within the art world are encouraged to apply. Those who have experienced financial hardships due to COVID-19 and other underlying circumstances are also encouraged to apply. Artwork must be completed within a 2-week timeframe after selection. All paintings, murals, or wall pieces must fit within a space of 60"x 60". 3D pieces and sculptures must be displayed indoors only. Artists should find a public space to display their art in their local Colorado community. Artwork must be photographed by October 9, 2020, and ready to transport by October 16, 2020. Murals must be painted by October 9 at the chosen site.

Selected artists will each receive a $2,000 budget to cover their time, materials, insurance, incidentals, and transportation costs. The artwork and artist will be featured online as part of an online social media campaign and virtual show. Artists are invited to discuss why they chose to create their pieces and get involved in the project. Sales of artwork are allowed and will be handled by the artist themselves, though the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project will display art for sale on their website. Applications are due by September 22, 2020. Selected artists will be notified by September 25, 2020.
