About This Call
The Reston Police Station and Governmental Center, located at 12000 Bowman Town Drive in Reston, VA, is undergoing reconstruction. Public art is planned for the east side of the site to be viewed from the Community room, by visitors entering the building, and by the public walking and driving along the adjacent street.
Public art goals include incorporating artwork as a demonstration of the County's commitment to public art and its role in defining a community, reflecting the character of the Reston Community, engaging visitors, creating a memorable landmark, and reinforcing the value of public art. The project budget for the selected commission is $65,000, inclusive of all expenses including design, fabrication, installation, travel, taxes and fees.
Eligibility is open to professional artists living in the greater Washington DC metropolitan area who are over 18 years old. Students may apply only as part of an artist team supervised by a lead professional artist over 18. Recipients must be able to receive payment from Fairfax County as a legal vendor. Submissions must include 3 works (6 images total, 2 views each) and a resume highlighting experience with site-specific artwork or public commissions. The Art Selection Committee and the Initiative for Public Art - Reston (IPAR) Public Art Committee will evaluate submissions based on artistic merit, appropriateness of medium and style, aesthetic quality, sensitivity to community, responsiveness to functionality, feasibility, compatibility with the site, ability to complete within timeline and budget, and technical proficiency. Semi-finalists will be notified by the end of November 2013 and interviewed in early December 2013. Questions should be directed to Kimberly Callahan at 703-324-5800 or TTY: 711.
