Request for Qualifications - Roundabout Sculptures

The Town of Windsor seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create 1-2 large-scale outdoor sculptures for two traffic roundabouts located prominently on Old Redwood Highway. The sculptures should fit within the theme of "Energizing the Future" and express kinetic properties while utilizing natural resources (water, sun, air, wind) to produce energy or fuel movement. The artwork should establish a distinct artistic identity for the area, be compatible within the spaces in terms of scale, materials, form, content and safety considerations, and require minimum conservation and maintenance.

The roundabouts are located near the town center of Windsor, adjacent to a new upscale shopping center, a future 387-unit residential development, the Sonoma County Library, Town Civic Center and Windsor Town Green. The estimated budget for both roundabouts is up to $200,000 ($100,000 per roundabout). Selected finalists will be invited to submit a concept for a commissioned sculpture and will be provided a $1,000 stipend for design development, presentation, and travel expenses. The presentation must include graphic depiction of design, sculpture budget, engineering, cost allocation and proposed timeline.

Eligibility is open to all established and professional artists with experience creating, fabricating and installing public art. Applicants should have proven ability to work with solar, wind or water elements within art pieces, experience fabricating and installing permanent artwork suitable for outdoor elements, project and timeline management experience, and successful experience working with local governmental or municipal agencies. Submissions must include a one-page letter of interest describing how qualifications and past work relate to the project theme, 1-3 professional references with intimate knowledge of work in public settings, and up to six images and one 60-second video.
