About This Call
The Franklin County Arts Council (Frank Arts) is seeking a mural artist or artist team to design and install a publicly viewable mural on the East facing wall of the Broadway Clay Building located at 223 W. Broadway in historic Downtown Frankfort. The wall is approximately 100 feet long and ranges from 25 feet tall at the back to 35 feet tall in front. There is no specific theme for the mural; however, the design should fit the location. Interactive murals that allow the public to engage with the work and present photo opportunities are of particular interest, as are those using trompe l'oeil techniques. The mural will remain for an anticipated period of 7-10 years, at minimum.
This is a two-phased selection process. Phase 1 is a Request for Qualifications with a July 9, 2021 deadline. Up to 5 artists or artist teams will be invited to Phase 2, where selected artists will prepare site-specific proposals. Each artist/artist team returning a completed proposal will receive an honorarium of $500 in addition to the all-inclusive mural budget. The all-inclusive budget for the mural is up to $20,000, depending on the size and complexity of the work. Installation is scheduled for August 25 – October 15, 2021.
Eligibility: Any artist over the age of 18 is eligible. Artists with strong professional profiles, experience producing exterior semi-permanent public murals, and/or successful collaborative project experience are encouraged to apply. Artist teams may apply. Artists must be able to adhere to the project timeline and must have worker's compensation and liability insurance. Submissions must include: current CV/resume, one-page letter of interest, up to 10 images of previously completed work demonstrating ability to design and create large-scale outdoor murals, image identification list, brief description of intended materials and protective coatings, and three professional references. Optional support materials such as reviews and news articles may be included. All submissions must be made electronically through the CaFÉ website by 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time on July 9, 2021. Contact Josie Kirker at [email protected] with questions.
