About This Call
In partnership with the City of Frankfort, Josephine Sculpture Park is seeking a mural artist or artist team to design and install a publicly viewable mural on a private building exterior located in the Second Street Corridor, between historic downtown Frankfort and the Capitol. The mural will be on the west-facing wall of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4075 located at 104 E 2nd St, Frankfort, KY. The left side of the wall is 11 feet tall and 77 feet long. The right side is 52 feet long, ranging in height from 16 to 19 feet. A site visit is not required but is recommended, particularly for artists selected for Phase 2.
JSP is seeking a mural that celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion inspired by and celebrating local history, specifically the 1964 March on Frankfort and Frankfort's role in the Kentucky civil rights movement. On March 4, 1964, the Allied Organization for Civil Rights organized a non-violent march to demand a state law to end segregation in public accommodations. The March on Frankfort, featuring Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jackie Robinson among others, brought together more than 10,000 marchers. The march helped lead to the passage of the Kentucky Civil Rights Act in 1966.
This is a two-phased selection process. Phase 1 is a Request for Qualifications with submissions due by January 18, 2023. Selected artists will advance to Phase 2, a Request for Proposals, with an honorarium of $500 provided to each artist/artist team returning a completed proposal. The all-inclusive budget for the mural is up to $13,000, depending on size and complexity. Installation is targeted for May-June 2023 with a completion date of July 31, 2023. Any artist over the age of 18 is eligible to submit. Artists must have worker's compensation and liability insurance. Local Kentucky/Regional artists and Artists of Color are strongly encouraged to apply. Submissions must include a current CV/resume, artist statement (limited to 2000 characters), letter of interest (one page), and up to ten images of previously completed work demonstrating ability to design, create, and paint large-scale outdoor murals.
