About This Call

The Municipality of Anchorage is seeking qualified artists to design image designs for perforated metal screens on the exterior of Z.J. Loussac Library. One artist will be commissioned to submit designs for two metal screens: one above the front entry (21' x 20') and one at the west-facing book drop (12' x 20'). The book drop screen must include the words "BOOK DROP" in the design. A glass window behind the front entry screen may be incorporated into the design. The selected artist will work with the manufacturer (Dri-Design) and the architect during the final design stage to ensure successful interpretation of the visual imagery onto the metal screens.

Project construction began in May 2015 and will be completed by Fall 2016. The fabrication of the metal screen will take place in November 2015. Artists selected for qualifications will be invited to submit full proposals by August 21, 2015, with 4 weeks to submit an image proposal. Once selected by the jury, the artist will have 3 weeks to refine images based on fabricator specifications. Final selection and contract will occur in early October, with final design completion required by October 23, 2015. The commission is for imagery only; all work related to procurement of materials and installation will be performed by the construction contractor.

The total commission is $7,500, which includes all costs related to design, photographic documentation, catalog documentation, and an identifying plaque. Images will be created using perforated imaging, where varying the size, location, and density of perforations creates areas of light, dark, and shades to form an image. The design must be identifiable from both close range and distance and must be adaptable to material specifications in grayscale. Applicants must submit six digital images of past work, a 1-2 page resume with three professional references, an artist statement describing interest in the project and relevant experience, and answers to required questions. This is a national call with Alaska preference. Contact: Curator of Public Art, (907) 343-6473.
