About This Call
The City of Mountain View's One Percent for Art Program requires that one percent of all major City Capital Improvement Program projects over $1 million be spent on public art. The Visual Arts Committee seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to design and execute an original two-dimensional work of art for two new prefabricated, modular buildings being constructed within Rengstorff Park. One building will serve as storage space for maintenance staff and include three restrooms; the second will include storage space for tennis equipment and three restrooms.
Three potential art locations have been identified: Area 1 (left-hand side wall of tennis building, 10' wide by 4' tall, $10,500 budget); Area 2 (right-hand side wall of tennis building, 12' wide by 4' tall, $12,600 budget); and Area 3 (exterior wall of maintenance building facing parking lot, 32' wide by 4' tall, $23,100 budget). The total project budget is $23,100, sufficient for Area 3 only. The City Council may increase the budget to $46,200 to allow artwork for all three locations. Artists may choose one or two locations for their proposals. The budget is all-inclusive of artist fees, materials, permit fees, travel, shipping, insurance, and installation.
Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2022 and be completed in summer 2022, with art installation expected to follow. The VAC will evaluate applications based on originality of artistic style, ability of artwork to withstand outdoor conditions, maintenance requirements, artist's experience with public art commissions, and experience with similar-sized projects. Rengstorff Park is located at 201 South Rengstorff Avenue and features 23 acres with playground, skate park, sports facilities, and community centers. Artists are encouraged to visit the site prior to submission.
