About This Call
Blue Springs Downtown Alive! issues a call to artists for two commissioned metal sculptures that are site-specific and incorporate recovered historic metal materials. The theme is "Remnants Restored." Each commission is $15,000.
This call seeks two unique and site-specific sculptures incorporating recovered metals of historic significance. One sculpture will incorporate recovered aluminum from the historic America's Community Bank building exterior (13 pieces of fabricated aluminum siding from the late 1960s, each 5" wide x 1'-0" height x 3'-0" length, plus 8 corners and 24 connecting straps). The second sculpture will incorporate recovered steel from the water tower that dominated the city landscape (four pieces of steel from the 1960s water tower: 6" x 8" x 1/4", 5 1/2' x 8'-9" x 1/4", 6' x 9' x 1/4", and 4 1/2' x 6' x 1/4", weighing approximately 600 lbs each). Artists may apply for either one or both commissions. The recovered materials will be provided and shipped to the winning artist without cost. The steel sculpture site is located one block off Main Street with an 8' depth by 20' wide display area. The aluminum sculpture site is at the entrance to a 24-space parking lot for the City Hall Campus with a 10' x 10' display area. The City of Blue Springs will install necessary footings and pedestals.
Applications must include a letter of interest identifying which category (aluminum or steel) you are applying for, a current resume with educational background and public art experience, and 4-6 JPEG images representative of your body of work (one additional video file is optional). Artists may apply for both categories by submitting two separate applications. Finalists will be notified February 20, 2015, make presentations the week of March 23, 2015, and winning artists will be announced March 30, 2015. Planned installation is the week of November 2, 2015, with dedication in Spring 2016. The honorarium of $15,000 per sculpture includes all costs including design, fabrication, engineering, transportation, and installation materials. Payment will be one-third upon commission award with the remaining amount arranged by contract. Contact Carol Reed at [email protected] or 816-228-0137 for questions or to arrange a site visit.
