About This Call
This is an invitational call for a site-specific exterior mural on painted block walls at the southwest corner of N. Catalina Ave. and N. Gertruda Ave in Redondo Beach, CA. The project spans two walls: the N. Catalina Ave wall (NW facing) is approximately 1,890 square feet (135' X 14'), and the N. Gertruda Ave wall (NE facing) is approximately 1,000 square feet (100' x 10'). The property is owned by the City and currently houses the Public Works Department.
The Public Art Commission has identified "The Sounds of Redondo" as the theme for this mural. The City seeks an exceptional artist or artist team to design and create an engaging mural that is conceptually, aesthetically, and technically compelling. The mural may be in any medium, style, or technique, including aerosol, mosaics, ceramics, paints, stencils, and more, and may incorporate non-traditional elements such as sound, lighting, 3-dimensional objects, or landscaping. There will be no logos, words, or commercial imagery in the mural. The total budget may not exceed $100,000 and must cover all costs including design, materials, equipment, installation, and insurance.
Invited artists who submit complete proposals by the deadline will receive a stipend equal to 1% of their estimated budget, not to exceed $1,000. The artist will be required to enter into an Agreement with the City that includes maintaining comprehensive general public liability and property damage insurance of at least $1,000,000, preparing wall surfaces, establishing a protected work area, coordinating traffic control, applying anti-graffiti/anti-ultraviolet clear coat, submitting a maintenance plan, and providing a warranty. Upon completion, the artwork becomes the property of the City. The artist must submit work samples (4-10 images), renderings of the proposed mural, photos of completed similar projects, a narrative describing the imagery and research, a description of project approach and materials for marine environment durability, an itemized budget, a maintenance plan, a warranty, and a minimum of 3 references.
