About This Call
San Francisco Center for the Book invites artists to participate in its 25th Anniversary exhibition, Reclamation: Artists' Books on the Environment, a juried exhibition of artists' books exploring our relationship to the environment. The exhibition will run from May 2021 through September 2021 at San Francisco Center for the Book and San Francisco Public Library in San Francisco, CA, with additional venues to be announced. The exhibition will travel to additional venues throughout 2021-2022 after closing at the inaugural locations.
This exhibition is open to handmade book and paper arts related works created either in edition or as a one-of-a-kind work, including artists' books, sculptural books, book objects, altered books, installations, zines, and broadsides. A maximum of three works may be submitted per artist. Publication date of each work must be 2015 or later. The entry fee is $25 (non-refundable) and covers up to three works. Images must be high resolution and submitted via the CaFE platform; submit 3-12 images total. Do not include title pages, colophon pages, or identifiable artist/press names in images. Photograph work on neutral gray or white backgrounds only. Include a detailed written description of each work in the artist statement section.
Curators are Betty Bright and Jeff Thomas. Jurors include Betty Bright, Mark Dimunation (Chief of the Rare Books and Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress), and Ruth Rogers (Curator of Special Collections at Wellesley College). Selected artists will be notified by December 15, 2020. Artwork must arrive at SFCB between December 16, 2020 and February 1, 2021. All shipping and insurance costs are the responsibility of the artist. Artists are encouraged to offer work for sale; artists receive 60% of the selling price. A full-color print catalog with essays by the jurors will be published. International artists are welcome; entry fee must be paid in US funds. Work in languages other than English is welcome with English translation.
