About This Call

(re)bound: the altered book is a juried exhibition seeking mixed media artwork that modifies a book from its original form by altering its state or meaning. Altered books can integrate text with sculptural and material richness to create a multi-sensory reading experience. Final pieces can take many different forms including sculpture, collage, assemblage or jewelry as long as 'the book' is evident in its final appearance. Books from any source utilizing any non-perishable medium are eligible. All work must be original and executed within the last three years.

The exhibition runs June 10 through July 23, 2022, and is juried by Vicki VanAmeyden, an artist and printmaker with an MFA in Painting from Western Michigan University and a BFA in Illustration from Kendall School of Design. Entry deadline is Sunday, April 24, 2022 at 11:59 pm EST. Entries are open to artists 18 years and above. A maximum of three images will be accepted. Entry fee is $35.00 for up to three pieces, with a reduced fee of $10.00 for student artists and artists economically challenged by COVID or unforeseen events.

Size limits are 2D - 72" high x 55" wide maximum; 3D - must fit through standard doorway, maximum 50 lbs. No installations or ceiling hung work. Work must be framed with wire (no sawtooth hangers) or be ready to hang. 3D works must be stable and pose no physical threat to visitors. Delivery of accepted work is May 25 through June 4, 2022, or by appointment. Shipped work must arrive by Friday, June 4, 2022. Opening reception is Friday, June 10, 5-7pm. Pick-up artwork is July 26 – August 4, 2022, or on the closing day, Saturday, July 23 from 4-5pm. Exhibited work may be sold at the price specified on the entry form; SHCA receives a 35% commission for works sold during the exhibition. South Haven Center for the Arts carries art insurance for work on display in the gallery but is not responsible for insuring artwork while traveling to and from the gallery.
