Rarefied Light 2024

Alaska Photographic Center invites artists to participate in Rarefied Light 2024, Alaska's largest juried photography exhibition. The competition is open to all artists residing in Alaska. All work submitted must be original work created and owned by the submitting photographer. This call is open to all forms and categories of photography with the exception of AI-generated work. Only original works not previously exhibited or scheduled for exhibition in a statewide juried exhibition in Alaska are eligible for submission. Recent work is preferred.

The 2024 juror is Aline Smithson, an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker, educator, and editor based in Los Angeles. Smithson has exhibited widely including over 50 solo shows at institutions such as the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art. She founded LENSCRATCH, a journal celebrating contemporary photographers, and has curated and jurored exhibitions for galleries and organizations including Review Santa Fe, Critical Mass, and the Griffin Museum. Smithson has been teaching at the Los Angeles Center of Photography since 2001.

Entry fees are $30 for the first image and $10 for each additional image (up to 20 entries per artist). APC Members receive discounted rates of $15 for the first entry and $5 for each additional entry. Optional APC Membership is $25 for one year, or $15 for students and seniors (65 and older). Judging will be done online using submitted digital entries. Participants will be notified of acceptance in July. Selected artwork must be exhibition-ready and submitted in October prior to the opening show in Anchorage at Alaska Pacific University in November. Exhibition-ready artwork must be framed in simple black, white, or silver metal or wood frames (no wider than 1.5 inches), with frame size limited to 24 inches on the longest side. Awards include a Best of Show selection with a $300 award and Honorable Mention Awards of $100. Rarefied Light 2024 has exhibitions planned in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Kenai, with selected art scheduled to be returned to artists in spring 2025.
