About This Call
Rarefied Light 2023 is a photography competition open to all artists residing in Alaska. All photographically derived works are eligible, including two-dimensional prints and three-dimensional objects and sculpture incorporating a photographic process. Only original works not previously exhibited or scheduled for exhibition in a statewide juried exhibition in Alaska are eligible. Recent work is preferred.
Entry fees are $30 for the first image and $10 for each additional image (non-members), or $15 for the first image and $5 for each additional image (APC members). A maximum of 20 entries per artist may be submitted. APC membership is optional at $25 for one year, or $15 for students and senior citizens (65 and older). Judging will be completed online using submitted digital entries. Participants will be notified of acceptance in July. Selected artwork must be exhibition-ready by September 2023.
The Best of Show award is $300, provided by APC. The juror will also select Honorable Mention Awards of $100. Exhibition-ready artwork must meet specific framing requirements: two-dimensional art should be framed in simple black, white, or silver metal or wood frames no wider than 1.0 inch, with white or natural museum board matting if matted. Frame size is limited to 24 inches on the longest side. Metal and canvas prints must be framed for protection. Plexiglass must be used for framed artwork larger than 20 inches on the longest side. Three-dimensional artwork may not be able to travel with the show due to fragility and gallery display limitations. Rarefied Light 2023 has exhibitions planned in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Kenai, with selected art scheduled to be returned to artists in spring 2024. Sales are encouraged, with each venue taking their standard gallery commission. All copyrights remain with the photographers.
