Rarefied Light 2021

Rarefied Light 2021 is a photography competition open to all artists residing in Alaska. All photographically derived works are eligible, including two-dimensional prints or three-dimensional objects and sculpture incorporating a photographic process. Only original works not previously exhibited or scheduled for exhibition in a statewide juried exhibition in Alaska are eligible. Recent work is preferred.

Entry fees are $30 for the first image and $10 for each additional image for non-members; APC members pay $15 for the first entry and $5 for each additional entry. Optional APC membership is $25 for one year, or $15 for students and senior citizens (65 and older). There is no limit to the number of entries that may be submitted. Judging will be completed online using submitted digital entries. Participants will be notified of acceptance in July. Selected artwork must be exhibition-ready by September 2021 and will be collected prior to the opening show in Anchorage at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art in October.

Awards include a Best of Show selection with a $300 award and Honorable Mention awards of $100. Exhibition-ready artwork must meet specific requirements: no watermarks or logos on printed images, two-dimensional art should be framed and matted with white or natural white museum board in simple black, white, or silver frames, metal and canvas prints must be framed, plexiglass must be used for framed artwork larger than 20 inches, and frame size is limited to 30 inches on the longest side. Selected art is scheduled to be exhibited in Anchorage and Fairbanks, with artwork returned to artists in early 2022. Sales are encouraged, with each venue taking their standard gallery commission. All copyrights remain with the photographers.
