Raising the Roof!

The Stifel Fine Arts Center, formerly "Edemar Mansion," was built from 1910-1912 as the family home of Mr. & Mrs. Edward W. Stifel, Sr. In 1976, the property was deeded to Oglebay Institute for use as a public arts center. Today, the venue and its programs engage more than 13,000 people each year with rotating gallery exhibitions, music series, classes, workshops, and special events.

In summer 2021, preservation work began on the Stifel Fine Arts Center, including complete removal and replacement of its terra cotta tile roof. This exhibition invites artists to create unique artwork using tiles salvaged from the old roof. Finished artworks will be auctioned to raise funds for the new roof. There is no entry fee. Each artist may enter one piece only. All work must be for sale, and artists set the minimum bid. Artwork must be no larger than 36" in any direction and no smaller than 11" x 9" (the size of one roof tile). Each work must include at least one roof tile from the Stifel Fine Arts Center and may use any medium that creates a permanent, archival piece. Artwork should be structurally sound to withstand public presentation.

Artists within driving distance of Wheeling, West Virginia are eligible. Roof tiles must be picked up from the Stifel Fine Arts Center (1330 National Road, Wheeling, WV) between January 31-February 19. Entry deadline is April 20th. Finished work must be hand delivered to the Stifel Fine Arts Center between April 25-30. The auction gala is May 7th. Submit a high-resolution (300 dpi) image for entry.
