About This Call

"Quiet as it's Kept" is an exhibition of Black art exploring the depths of the Black experience and its complex roots. The exhibition features landscapes, surrealism, digital art, sculpture, and both traditional and innovative works. This youth-led juried exhibition at the Trolley Barn Gallery on Main Street in Poughkeepsie will feature invited mid-career artists alongside international emerging Black artists selected through an open call. International emerging Black artists will have the opportunity to exhibit alongside established painters, sculptors, and installation artists.

Submissions are limited to national and international Black artists of all ages. Work samples must include a minimum of 3 images and a maximum of 15 total samples (images, audio, and video combined). Audio submissions are limited to 6 maximum, and video submissions are limited to 6 maximum. Entry fee is $20 plus a $5 media fee. Artists will be notified approximately 2–3 weeks after the deadline by email about selection status. The exhibition runs October 6 through November 10, 2023, at The Art Effect's Trolley Barn Gallery, 489 Main St., Poughkeepsie, New York. An opening reception will take place on Friday, October 6 from 6 pm to 8 pm (free and open to the public). An artist talk is scheduled for October 14 from 1 pm to 3 pm. Selected works will be re-curated for The Art Effect's annual Art After Dark gala on November 17, 2023.

Juried artists are selected by the Trolley Barn Gallery's youth curators and guest curator Janice Bond, and are considered for cash prizes: Guest Juror's Prize ($500), Youth Jurors' Prize ($250), and Honorable Mention Prize ($150). Artwork will be shown in the Trolley Barn Gallery and in an online exhibition. Exhibiting artists may specify a retail price for work available for purchase. The Art Effect retains a 20% commission fee for members and current students, and 30% for non-members. Art arrival dates are August 22–September 8, and art return dates are November 28–December 8. The Trolley Barn Gallery does not cover travel, lodging, or shipping for international juried exhibitions.
