About This Call
The City of Pueblo, Colorado is seeking individuals or teams of artists to create monumental gateway sculptures for the new Interstate 25 Dillon Drive Bridge, Exit 104. The goal is to emphasize the theme of "Pueblo Gateway to the Southwest" on the north entry to Pueblo. Two monumental pieces approximately 45 feet tall will be installed in existing roundabout islands constructed as part of the Dillon Drive Bridge project. The sculpture foundations design and construction costs must be integrated into the selected sculpture. Only artists and teams residing in the southwest states of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah are eligible.
The City of Pueblo seeks an artist or artist team made up of artists, licensed engineers, landscape architects, and/or planners with expertise in creating outdoor public art that can withstand Southern Colorado's extreme climate conditions. The sculptural monuments should be visible from a distance as one enters and exits the city to the north and from the roundabout at street level. Lighting should be considered as an enhancing component. The proposed pieces should evoke the theme of Pueblo as the gateway to the southwest. Teams must have more than one exterior installed piece of similar scale for a public-sector client, proven involvement in a public project process, ability to design and fabricate or coordinate fabrication, ability to attend monthly meetings with the City of Pueblo and selection committee, and experience engaging the community through public meetings. A professional structural engineer licensed in Colorado must be included on the team.
Applications must be submitted through CaFÉ (www.callforentry.org) and include a statement of interest (500 words or less), six digital images of previously completed artworks with descriptions and costs, current resumes and references for each team member, and contact information for the projects shown in work samples. A shortlist of up to five artists and/or teams will be selected to participate in a stipend-compensated Request for Proposal (RFP) process. Each finalist team will receive a design honorarium of $1,500. The estimated project budget is up to $600,000, all-inclusive of design, fabrication, installation, professional service fees, labor, materials, travel expenses, traffic control, and participation in coordination meetings and up to two community meetings. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2018, pending funding appropriations.
