About This Call
The City of Pueblo and the Colorado Department of Transportation is seeking a creative team made up of artists, engineers, landscape architects and/or planners with expertise in creating integrated, outdoor public art and bridge monuments that are durable and can withstand Southern Colorado's extreme climate conditions. The commission budget is $300,000. Teams may work on one or more of the following art opportunities: Vertical Monuments—four freestanding features at a minimum height of 25 feet reflecting the community's identity, fastened to existing concrete monument bases at each corner of the 4th Street Bridge (requires a professional structural engineer licensed in Colorado); Pier Medallions—paint, stain, and inlaid materials or tiles to enhance existing form liner design on bridge piers; and Pedestrian Walkways—paint, stain, and inlaid tiles to enhance walls and surfaces of pedestrian walkways and selected locations including light pole bases, gateways, overlooks, plazas, and monument bases.
The City of Pueblo may commission up to three teams. An Art Selection Committee composed of art professionals, project stakeholders, and Downtown business owners will establish a qualified shortlist of 5 to 10 teams and may invite them to interview for a stipend-compensated Request for Proposal process. The Selection Committee will recommend candidates to the Pueblo City Council for award.
Team prerequisites include more than one exterior installed work for a public sector client, proven involvement in a public project process, ability to design and fabricate or coordinate fabrication of art or monuments for installation, ability to attend meetings in Pueblo, ability to participate with the design team through final design, and experience engaging the community. Selection criteria include artistic statement, appropriateness of art medium and professional experience related to the bridge structure, durability and ability to withstand use and climate extremes, maintenance regime including anti-vandalism approach, response to local culture and heritage, and resume and references with similar work. Applicants must be Colorado residents, have previous similar art experience, and must not be employed by or affiliated with organizations represented on the Selection Committee. Six images are required for submission.
