About This Call
The City of Olathe is accepting proposals for a public sculpture to be installed at the roundabout at S Ridgeview Rd and E Sheridan St. The Olathe Public Art Committee is seeking either an existing sculpture that will fit the site or ideas for original work to be commissioned for installation by March 2022.
Eligibility is open to all experienced artists age 18 and older. All entries must be original work. The budget for this project is $50,000. The selected artist will be responsible for shipment/delivery to site and installation. The available budget must cover all artists' expenses including price of artwork, artist fees, materials, tools, travel, installation, and other associated costs. The pad for the artwork as well as any necessary lighting or integrated landscaping will be provided by the City.
The submitted artwork should reflect one or more of the following goals: create a strong and visually interesting public sculpture for Olathe; communicate the value Olathe places on art and culture in the community; be visible from a moving vehicle both day and night; and feature an aspect of Olathe's vibrant community including the future, landscape, history, and/or culture. The artwork should be visually interesting from all roundabout entry points and appreciated from a distance without requiring up-close inspection. Interactive artwork is discouraged. The artwork must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe, easily maintained, and proven in public installations. The roundabout diameter (inside the bricks) is approximately 97 feet.
Submissions should include a professional resume/CV, a summary of the public sculpture outlining materials, durability, maintenance requirements and costs, estimated total cost, timeframe for completion, proposed placement with dimensions, and lighting recommendations. For existing artwork, include the title, description/meaning, dimensions, weight, and all previous display locations with dates. For proposed artwork, include conceptual design drawings with dimensions and weight. Submit up to 6 images, drawings, or videos and provide three references of similar commissioned work with current contact information. The Public Art Committee reserves the right to make no selection if the appropriate piece is not presented.
