About This Call
The City of Providence Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, Mayor's Office for Senior Services, and the Lillian Feinstein Senior Center invite Rhode Island-based muralists to install an original permanent mural. The awarded artist or artist team will begin a residency in late September 2021 and will work with the Lillian Feinstein Senior Center for up to six weeks or until the mural is installed. The total project budget is $20,000, of which $10,200 will be directly allocated to the artist or artist team.
Applicants must be 18 years or older and hold a current Rhode Island home or studio address. Providence residents and/or artists with previous lived experience in Providence will be preferred. This call is open to muralists only, with preference given to artists demonstrating interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary arts practices, traditional and indigenous artforms, or intercultural modalities. Applicants must have demonstrated experience with a portfolio of at least one to five outdoor murals and at least one successful art-based program including instruction, fabrication of public art, or performance production. Spanish speakers are preferred. Applicants must be able to attend a virtual interview on either September 13 or 14, 2021.
The Lillian Feinstein Senior Center is located at 1085 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence RI 02908. The façade to be painted faces a multi-use parking lot with full visibility from the street. The artist will facilitate engagement activities to determine the content for the permanent work through careful consideration with center members and key residents. Most engagement activities will occur indoors at the Senior Center and outdoors in the parking lot, aligned with current COVID-19 safety protocols. Many center members and immediate neighbors are of Latinx descent; the artist can expect to lead communications in both English and Spanish. Eligible artists or artist teams may submit their artist statement, resume/CV, and three to five examples of relevant projects by August 31, 2021. Questions about this call must be submitted in writing by August 20, 2021 to Gina Rodriguez-Drix at [email protected] with the subject line "Residency at Lillian Feinstein Senior Center". An FAQ will be posted on August 25, 2021 at https://artculturetourism.com/category/act-public-art/.
