About This Call

The Town of Superior is seeking an artist or artist team to design and create a public artwork for a roundabout at McCaslin Boulevard. The project budget is $200,000, which must cover design, fabrication, shipment to the site, and artist assistance with installation. Installation and base foundation costs will be covered by the Town. The selected artist or team will be responsible for all other costs including artist fees, taxes, insurance, materials, tools, travel, project photography, documentation, and contingencies.

The artwork must be designed "in the round" and be equally intriguing from all angles. It must improve safety at the site without creating disorientation or distraction for drivers. The artwork should be scaled to the attention of approaching drivers but not require up-close inspection for appreciation. It must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe and easily maintained, able to withstand deep snowfall and high winds, and constructed to discourage theft and vandalism. The artwork must be suitable for public viewing by all ages.

Submissions must include eight paper copies of: contact information verifying completion of at least one public art project, two professional references, artist statement (one page maximum), conceptual design drawings with dimensions and placement information, estimated project budget including installation costs, timeframe for completion, description of materials and durability, maintenance requirements and estimated costs, and resume (two pages maximum per artist). Applicants must also submit ten high-resolution JPEG images of relevant completed artwork via Dropbox, flash drive, or the CaFE site, along with an image list identifying each work by number, title, media, completion date, dimensions, and brief description. The CAPS Committee will select up to three finalists who will develop additional presentation materials and a maquette (unsigned, up to two feet high). The Town will reimburse finalists up to $500 for maquette creation and up to $1,000 for reasonable travel expenses to Superior for an oral presentation. Finalists will present to the CAPS Committee, which will make a recommendation to the Town's Board of Trustees for final selection. The selected artist must execute the Town's Art Installation Agreement. Submittal deadline is October 2, 2017, at 4:00 pm MST. Mail or hand-deliver applications to: Town of Superior, Attn: Katie Rummel, 124 E. Coal Creek Dr., Superior, CO 80027.
