Public Art: Mural for the City of Petoskey

The City of Petoskey Public Arts Commission is seeking proposals from mural artists residing in Michigan to design and paint/install a mural on a City-owned tunnel site that connects the Downtown Business District with the Downtown Greenway Corridor, located next to Little Traverse Bay. The mural should cover approximately 1,700 square feet of interior surface area (walls: 56' x 6'7", ceiling: 56' x 15', angled connecting faces: 56' x 1'5"). The City will prepare the wall in advance and paint the tunnel a single flat color according to the artist's design.

The selected artist will be awarded between $15,000 and $30,000. Proposed bids should reflect the level of complexity and mural technique described in the proposal and must include all phases of the project: design work, iteration, all materials, labor, insurance, and a final protective coating. The design and palette could reflect the unique location, natural and cultural environments of Petoskey, local ecosystems, or other regional dimensions through representational, abstract, non-objective, or decorative imagery. The designated space includes a public piano, which may be considered in the design.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside in Michigan, and have successfully completed at least two public murals. The submission window is July 15 - August 17, 2024. Finalist will be contacted by August 22, 2024, with final design due August 29, 2024. The painting/installation window is September 7 - October 7, 2024 (tunnel will remain open to foot traffic). Application materials must be submitted through CallforEntry.org and include 6-9 photographs of at least 2 completed murals, 3-5 color concept sketches or digital graphics for the proposed design, and 0-2 optional videos.
