About This Call
The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry's 2015 Public Art Exhibition on Hilton Head Island seeks proposals for sculpture engaged in a contemporary conversation about art within a natural environment. Up to twenty large-scale outdoor sculptures will be selected by an esteemed jury based upon artistic excellence, innovation, interactivity, originality, and the work's ability to enhance the natural and cultural environment as well as reflect the values and diversity of Hilton Head Island. All artists chosen to participate will be awarded a $2,000 participation stipend. One of the sculptures may be purchased for an amount of up to $75,000 and donated to the Town of Hilton Head Island's growing public art collection. Three additional sculptures will be selected as "People's Choice" award winners and will be awarded cash prizes with the possibility for an extended temporary leasing agreement.
Sculptures should be large in scale, reaching at least 8 feet in one direction. Works selected will vary in medium and size, representing styles both literal and abstract. Sculptures will be juried on artistic excellence, innovation, interactivity, originality, and the work's ability to enhance the natural and cultural environment as well as reflect the values and diversity of the Town's neighborhoods. Additional criteria include public safety, durability, and the overall feasibility of the artwork to meet constraints such as budget, construction feasibility and Town codes. All sculptures must be able to withstand natural elements with little to no required maintenance.
The Exhibition will take place from mid-September 2015 through early January 2016 at the Coastal Discovery Museum's historic Honey Horn, a 68-acre property with a history dating back 300 years. The site features salt marshes, open fields, stands of centuries-old live oak trees, the state's largest Southern Red Cedar tree dated at 1595, and a collection of some of the oldest buildings on Hilton Head Island. The 2015 Exhibition estimates an audience of over 30,000 students, residents and tourists. Entry deadline is March 25, 2015. Jury process will take place in April 2015, with acceptance notifications in Mid-May. Entry fee is $35.00. Submit a maximum of three images (minimum one image required).
