About This Call

The 2013 Public Art Exhibition on Hilton Head Island, DISCOVER, seeks proposals for large-scale outdoor sculptures engaged in a contemporary conversation about art within a natural environment. The theme is intended to inspire submissions that foster discovery, exploration, interaction, recreation, education and an element of surprise within the beauty of the Lowcountry region. The year 2013 marks the 350th anniversary of William Hilton discovering what became known as Hilton Head Island.

Up to twenty sculptures will be selected by an esteemed jury based upon artistic excellence, innovation, interactivity, originality, and the work's ability to enhance the natural and cultural environment as well as reflect the values and diversity of Hilton Head Island. All artists chosen to participate will be awarded a $2,000 participation stipend. One sculpture will be purchased for $25,000 to $75,000 and donated to the Town of Hilton Head Island's public art collection. Three additional sculptures will be selected as "People's Choice" and awarded cash prizes with the possibility for an extended temporary leasing agreement. The application deadline is March 15, 2013. Entry fee is $35.00. Submit 1-6 images of your work.

The exhibition will take place from mid-September 2013 through mid-January 2014 at Coastal Discovery Museum's historic Honey Horn Plantation, a 68-acre property with salt marshes, open fields, centuries-old live oak trees, and historic buildings. All sculptures must be able to withstand natural elements with little to no required maintenance and will be installed adhering to Town and Museum standards. The jury will be led by co-curatorial consultants Melissa Messina and Dr. Lisa Jaye Young. The exhibition is expected to attract over 30,000 students, residents and tourists.
