About This Call
The City of Eugene is issuing a Request for Qualifications from experienced artists or artist-teams to create a public work of art at Eugene Airport (EUG), located at 28801 Douglas Drive, Eugene, OR 97402. This project is funded by EUG's Percent for Art mandate, whereby 1% of eligible airport construction and renovation funds are allocated for public art. The project budget does not exceed $120,000, including all costs for research, materials, fabrication, transportation, travel, insurance, and installation. Artists must provide a comprehensive long-term care and maintenance plan.
This commission is open to professional artists, 18 and over, located and working within the United States. Artists working with architecturally-integrated aerial sculpture design and art-glass are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have previous experience as principal artists on at least 2 projects with art budgets over $100,000. Preference will be given to applicants with previous airport design and installation experience. The project awardee will be required to obtain airport security clearance. Submissions will be considered from all artists regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender identification, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical ability.
Submissions must be received through Café by 5 PM MST on October 25, 2019. Required materials include: a 2,000-character statement of interest; 8 images of past projects (JPEG/JPG, under 5MB, minimum 1200 pixels on longest side); resume/CV not exceeding two pages; 3 professional references; and optionally, one video up to 3 minutes (WMV, MOV, MP4, under 100MB, minimum 640x480 resolution, 12fps minimum). The site is located in the escalator and elevator core area of the terminal, offering opportunities for aerial sculpture and art-glass. Artwork should evoke positive feelings through color and movement, represent an interpretation of flight, and incorporate the region's passion for nature. The work will be viewed from both upper and lower terminal levels and from outside the terminal. Five finalists will be invited to create site-specific proposals and will each receive a $1,500 stipend. Notifications will be posted by November 29, 2019.
