About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita is seeking artwork for its Public Art program. Artist(s) are invited to submit portfolios of past work for consideration. Up to five (5) artists will be invited to submit site-specific proposals for a functional Bike Rack artwork to be located on a concrete pad at the Trek Bike Park. The City intends to select one artist to design and fabricate the artwork. The all-inclusive budget for this project is $8,000 in total.
The Bike Rack must be a functional sculpture with two points of contact for bikes to be secured to and should accommodate a minimum of eight bikes. The artwork must fit in a pre-determined space with dimensions provided to semi-finalists. The design must incorporate at least 60 percent of recycled materials. Artwork can be of any medium, but artists should consider materials that can withstand outside desert climate conditions (high winds, extreme temperatures), uncovered weather, and resistance to theft and vandalism. Artists must describe their experience working with the proposed material and provide a suggested maintenance schedule. The artwork must be constructed of durable materials, comply with standard engineering practices, conform to ADA standards, and be installed with sufficient anchoring to prevent removal or damage from wind or earthquake. Power is not available onsite; if required, a solar component is suggested.
Design themes are encouraged but not limited to aesthetics, vibrancy, bright colors, landmarks, nature, site-specificity, family-friendly elements, and the local biking community. Artwork must be an original design suitable for viewing by all ages and may not be used for advertisement or promote business, products, or viewpoints. Designs must not include intellectual property breaches, trademarks, brands, corporate branding, or images of drugs. Semi-finalists will receive a $300 honorarium for their proposal and must present a PowerPoint/PDF proposal addressing design guidelines, maintenance, conservation, and budget to the Artist Selection Committee. The selected artist is responsible for delivery, installation, all associated expenses, travel, hotel accommodations, and insurance coverage for the installation period. Application deadline: November 30, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Artists must be 18 years or older with a US mailing address and must submit a W-9.
