About This Call

The County of Durham, North Carolina invites qualified artists or artist teams to submit qualifications for the design, fabrication, and installation of permanent public artwork at the Durham County Main Library, currently under construction. The project seeks artists with experience creating public art that fosters a unique sense of place.

Two areas have been identified for public art installations. The first is at the intersection of North Roxboro and Liberty Streets, adjacent to a large entry plaza with bench seating that provides opportunities for public engagement and interaction. The second area is inside the Library, directly across from the main entrance along the monumental stair wall. Both installations will be highly visible to pedestrians, passing traffic, and Library visitors. The total budget for this project is $100,000, inclusive of all costs including materials, equipment, labor, permits, engineering documents, insurance, taxes, travel, installation, shipping, identification plaque, maintenance instructions, and professional photographic documentation.

Artwork should be inspired by the Durham County Library System's 120-year journey to twenty-first century technology, resource innovation, and citizen enrichment. Commissioned work should be respectful of Durham County and its Library system's values and mission, culturally responsive, and designed to engage and connect with the public by activating and enhancing the facility's grounds. Candidates should be mindful of the facility's operational activities and regular daily use, seeking to create an inviting civic statement that welcomes visitors, staff, and passersby. The Main Library is expected to be completed in Fall 2019 and is located on approximately 4 acres on North Roxboro Street between Liberty Street and Holloway Street. Submit questions in writing via email to [email protected] by February 15, 2019. Submit 1-10 images of work samples.
