About This Call

The City of Thornton, in collaboration with the Regional Transportation District (RTD), is seeking to purchase existing (prefabricated) 3D large-scale work or designs for the 124th Station located at 124th Avenue and First Street. The public art work will serve as a gateway into Thornton and should touch on the station's overall theme of Historic Eastlake while creating a strong visual impact to help establish Thornton as an innovative and exciting destination-city engaged in contemporary conversations on art and culture.

The 124th Station has one designated site for installation: two station planters, each 35 feet by 45 feet with a height restriction of 14 feet. Both planters must be completed and installed no later than December 31, 2020. The total project budget is $40,000, inclusive of artist payment and all costs associated with transportation, shipping, installation, insurance, and other completion costs. Applicants must submit 4-15 images and up to 2 videos of existing work or designs. This nationwide call is open to all artists, teams, and architectural firms age 18 and over. City of Thornton employees are not eligible. Preference will be given to those with existing prefabricated work or designs ready for purchase. Special consideration will be made for applicants without prefabricated work who are confident in their ability to install work and meet project deadlines.

The RTD Review Panel will conduct a portfolio review in April-May, identifying one piece or design for purchase based on skill level, artistic merit, and overall impact. The finalist may be asked to present their work in a public forum. The RTD Review Panel will recommend the selection to the Thornton Arts, Sciences and Humanities Council (TASHCO) for approval, which will then present the recommendation to Thornton City Council for final approval. The award winner will be notified by July 1, 2020, and will coordinate with RTD and city staff for implementation planning from July through December 2020.
