About This Call
The City of Thornton, in collaboration with the Regional Transportation District (RTD), is seeking to purchase existing (prefabricated) 3D large-scale work or designs for the 104th station located at 104th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. The public art work will serve as a gateway into Thornton and should touch on the station's overall theme of "Thornton Connected" while creating a strong visual impact to help establish Thornton as an innovative and exciting destination-city engaged in contemporary conversations on art and culture.
The 104th station has one designated installation area: the Colorado Boulevard Retaining Wall, which must be completed and installed by December 31, 2020. The wall is 120 feet long with an 11-foot height decreasing to 3 feet. There are no weight restrictions for work anchored to the wall, though lightweight materials are recommended. The total project budget is $55,000, inclusive of artist payment and all costs associated with transportation, shipping, installation, insurance, and project completion.
This nationwide call is open to all artists, teams, and architectural firms age 18 and over. Preference will be given to those with existing prefabricated work or designs ready for purchase. Special consideration will be made for applicants without prefabricated work who are confident in their ability to install work and meet project deadlines. City of Thornton employees are not eligible. Work must withstand Colorado's weather conditions, be durable with minimal maintenance requirements, and comply with RTD Art Guidelines regarding safety, clearance regulations, and infrastructure connections. The RTD Review Panel will conduct portfolio review in April-May, with final award notification by July 1, 2020. Applicants must submit 4-20 portfolio pieces via cafe.org.
